A photo of my desk with three monitors; one on the desk is a pen display tablet (a Xppen Artist Pro 24) with customised shortcut written in white using nail polish. The tablet has a keyboard using a CinTweak keyboard holder. The keyboard is the classic flat from Dell. I have also a little bluetooth gamepad with key customised (by 8bitdo). On the foreground, a Blahaj shark plushies is wearing headphones. On the canvas, a study I made two weeks ago and on other monitors Mastodon in multi column 'deck' mode. Same, two weeks ago when I took this shot. The last monitor has Dolphin the file explorer of KDE Plasma Fedora, IRC, Clementine to listen musique. A terminal windows is around, I was updating the monitor calibration with argyllcms using command line interface

is your keyboard raised on a little platform? i can't quite tell.

(i'm trying to figure out a set up that lets me switch easily between drawing and typing, thus my particular interest there)
โdavidrevoy
@kate On this setup, I type with the two forearms on the XpPenArtistPro24 display. It's 'ok' because it's not a super hot display tablet; but not 100% ideal. Still, I managed recently to make big morning of writing or code for the website in this position. When I have to do more keyboard intensive task for the full day; I just detach the keyboard, and push the display under the top one (and close it). Not ideal again, but so far, it works.

@kate It's a very cool piece of hardware, the universal Cintweak keyboard trays: https://cintweak.com/ , a life changer for keyboard shortcuts ๐ .

Having lived through so much computing itโs a amazing the things we have today. That tablet is so futuristic and what can be done is mind blowing.
โdavidrevoy
@breadbin Oh yes, especially compared to 20 years ago when flat panel were still super expensive. I remember my first Cintiq 12wx, with 1280x800px for 12 inch, super dark. Then my bulky super expensive 21UX. This large 24 inch has quad HD resolution (2560x1440px) and is not that thick. It makes me wonder how will look my desk in 20 years from now ๐
3 โslothdude@mastodon.online
@breadbin โDesk? Where weโre going, we donโt need desks.โ
โWell, actually, I believe we will, for arm support if nothing else. And a stylus is better than trying to finger paint with virtual tools, as is a real keyboard for typing. But a lot of the other stuff will probably be replaced by unobtrusive AR gear.
breadbin@bitbang.social
I remember trying to paint something (very unsuccessfully I might add, Iโm no artist) using a joystick on a C64:)
Who knows if the future breakthroughs will be hardware, software, or something else. :)

Nice setup! Does monitor calibration work in Wayland now, or are you still on X11?
davidrevoy
@kvaks Hi! Wayland is far to be ready for my workflow, color calibration might be soon for next 6 month or 1 year (in progress?) but many features are still missing. Wayland can't even calibrate the cursor under the pen tip (to avoid parralax) on this tablet, so not possible for me to make art under Wayland right now. ๐
ademan@thebag.social
โcalibrate the cursor under the pen tip (to avoid parralax)โ
I didnโt realize artists did this, that only helps as long as youโre using your tablet from one angle right? If you were to adjust the angle of your tablet youโd need to recalibrate this?
davidrevoy
@ademan Yes, sort of. It solve the parralax for a single position, so if the position changes too much, it's good to recalibrate.

what is this yellow remote control at the bottom of the picture ?
davidrevoy
@davidou Hey, it's a https://www.8bitdo.com/zero/ gamepad; this one has a 'keyboard mode' where the pad returns random letters. I kept this mode and customised it with this method https://www.davidrevoy.com/article989/how-to-customise-a-usb-numeric-keypad-under-gnulinux , so now it's a wireless shortcut remote while I draw. It's ok, a bit tiny for my big hands, and it also loose battery after 3 full days of painting. But it charge quickly, and pressing start it connect to bluetooth quickly too. So, it is still convenient.

Since you like to test hardware on Linux, here's an artist using an ASUS tablet. IN case you manage to make ASUS to send you one for testing.

@mhunt Hey, thanks for the link! (at 1:42; while drawing the eyes, big display lag) Oh, I'm pretty sure I'll have them on my email soon. The tricky part is always when I tell them I want to test without the proprietary driver and on Linux. That's where most disapear or don't reply ๐ We'll see!
โmhunt@socel.net
I think I heard in the video that it doesn't has a specific driver. But if you do get one for review, you'll know. Have fun then.
