Fanart tribute to Toriyama. Arale, Dr. Slump

Published on

I learned this morning of the passing of Akira Toriyama, the father of Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump, designer of Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger. Also, probably the artist who influenced me the most when I started drawing. So I'm repurposing the blog post I made of a fan art I drew of Arale and I'll date it of today. My heart is really heavy this morning...

Original post ( 23 october 2022 ):

A fanart of the little girl robot Arale Norimaki, main character of the Japanese manga series Dr. Slump (Japanese: Dr.スランプ) written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama from 1980 to 1984. I have all the manga at home and I had a lot of fun painting this one.

This artwork was also here to test my new workflow, one that attempts to get better volumes, light, and ease preserving a contrast between sharp edges and soft shading. I had to test it on a funny character full of energy and motion.

Dr.Slump is a copyrighted property of Shueisha publisher, Toei Animation and Akira Toriyama. Artwork done under fair-use, do not reuse commercially unless you have approval from the copyright owner to do so.

Oh jeez! You gave me tears: I read it at university and I have sweet memories of reading it. Super thank you :-)

Also as a tribute to Toriyama, I would like to share the cameos and influences in my webcomic here (which are hidden or vague due to copyright reasons):

1. You can find a Super Saiyan character doing the line in front of Saffron's house.

2. The magic competition arena decoration.

3. The fight with Shichimi

4. Goku was born "Kakarot" (carrot), so now you know why my cat with long tail and eyes like young Goku is called "Carrot".

1. a comic page of Pepper&Carrot. Episode 16. A line in front of Saffron witchcraft in the street of Komona. Cameos are in the line. 2. a comic page of Pepper&Carrot. Episode 21. The arena of the magic contest.3. a comic page of Pepper&Carrot. Episode 34. A fight between Pepper and Shichimi, Dragon Ball Z style.4. a comic page of Pepper&Carrot. Episode 18. How Pepper names Carrot (because he was hidding in a crate of Carrot) but there is another reason for this name. 196 ★

I just used to watch his works as a child a lot. So yeah its really a bummer.

Also there is this trend of mangaka really overworking themselves and dying relatively early.

You could make a fortune but not have any time to spend any of it.

Oh no, I didn't knew!
A lot of Dr. Slump-quotes are still part of my daily life. And I will always remember how hard I laughed about the guy with the magical running socks who had lost one of them and was running in a circle. I love that panel.

I didn‘t expect me to be this sad about a death from someone I didn‘t know personally.
I have to thank him for a lot of great childhood memories and beyond….

I only learned yesterday… really sad, I’ve coincidentally been playing a ton of Chrono Trigger lately so this really sucks.

as a 90s kid I can't begin to explain the influence DBZ had on me. It taught me to be good for goodness sake and to stand up for what's right. Beyond missed. Hopefully we all get to see him on snake way one day
