Tutorial: Coloring with "Colorize-mask" in Krita

I'm positing today a full step by step video tutorial about the Colorize Mask feature; you'll find in it everything to get started and extras tips to not fall into commons traps and get productive with it. The colorize mask is not new, it came in April 2018 with the release of Krita 4.0 and was inspired by the work of the GMIC developpers but it took me a year to adapt to use it in production of comic pages: I had to adapt my line-art, the resolution of my drawings and be more confident with the tool.

Great tutorial, as usual. One question from a noob though:
What are you specifically checking using the mirror mode? Some problems with symmetry, that you wouldn't notice otherwise because - just guessing - dominant / non-dominant eye issues etc.? Just my curiosity - I wouldn't have thought about doing it, so I wonder why it's a good idea ;-)

hey! Thanks, I do the mirror thing because after 10min with the eyes on a drawing, my brain start to get used to the picture issues and even process a sort of 'makeup' overlay on it. This overlay is the magic happening when a beginner shows a portrait and is sure the work is good (while it is not). Mirroring the artwork propose to the eyes a new 'artwork' and cheat this brain overlay. Then it is easier to spot if a major error or balance on the artwork is happening (with the risk of getting an overlay for both mirrored version if used too often).

I've been in the CG world for a while now (on and off I would say, since I'm a hobbyist) and I had a long time of not having a pure magic moment until now when I first tried the colorize mask! it's pure magic :)

One issue I just noticed, not sure if its a bug or not, when trying to mark the background of my drawing as transparent, I chose a specific and different color for this in the colorize mask palette and select Transparent, but then all the sudden the Key Strokes slots change of position, and also the strokes I did in my drawing changed of color :/ the color I selected gets marked as transparent in the Colorize mask editing tool settings though.

Sorry for report this issue here... I can't appreciate enough the effort you put in this tutorials. Thank you David

Je m'obstine à dessiner avec krita malgré ses petits bug, le manque de certains petits brush, où on perd pas mal de temps à chercher des trucs et astuces... ^^ J'aime beaucoup vos tutos et ils m'aide parfois bien mais là c'est à n'y rien comprendre... je fais exactement comme vous dans le tuto mais moi ça colore tout le dessin entier ou ça dépasse fortement des zones que j'ai "raturé"... Je fais mon dessin ds une bonne résolution 300dpi et une taille imprimable est ce que cela jouerai ? Les contours ne sont pas forcément tous en noir comme un coté aquarelle... cela joue t il ? ou est ce que fais mal la manipulation... quand je clique sur les fleches rondes cela mets pas mal de temps à calculer aussi mais ça change en rien que ça fonctionne pas dans la précision de ce que prépare en coloration...

Pouvez vous m'aider s'il vous plait ?

Bonjour Angie,
Alors si vous reproduisez le tuto (et je vous fais confiance) c'est sans doute un bug spécifique à votre plateforme. Le fait que vous parliez d'autres logiciels payants semblent pointer que vous êtes sous Windows (ou Mac) car sous Linux, il n'y pas trop d'alternatives payantes. Le colorize mask a eu en effet des bugs sur windows dans les versions précédentes (4.2.7 et 4.2.8 que je n'ai pas trouvé bonne et sortie sans trop de tests... je suis passé de 4.2.6 à 4.2.9) . Il faut tenter de mettre à jour vers 4.2.9 (la version sortie aujourd'hui) et retenter si ce n'est pas déjà fait. J'ai fait partie des test de 4.2.9 et sous Linux, le colorize mask fonctionnait bien, j'ai vérifié. Si sous votre système le colorize mask ne fonctionne pas; il faut contacter l'équipe de Krita. Idem pour reporter les petits bugs que vous mentionnez. C'est l'unique moyen et ne pensez pas que quelqu'un le fera pour vous. C'est un logiciel associatif et collaboratif, on en a que ce que on y met dedans aussi :-) Bon courage, l'obstination est une qualité essentiel en dessin à mon avis et merci pour les mots sympa sur mes tutos!

Bonjour !

Merci pour votre réponse ! Effectivement j'ai vu et mis la mise à jour de la nouvelle version avant de refaire la manipulation. MAIS pas d'pot ! ça fonctionne toujours pas et oui j'ai W10 ^^
Donc si cela est un bug sous mon système alors oui je vais le signaler au cas où car j'ai un autre soucis mais c'est toujours difficile de savoir si ça viens pas de notre pc ou autre fonction informatique... mais là j'ai un pc tout neuf de janvier et le soucis que j'ai est toujours là et il est pour le moins très étrange et à la fois très gênant... Lorsque que je prend un brush (souvent c'est ceux qui ont un petit icone dans l'icone ) je sais pas si vous comprendrez ce que je dis j'aurai aimé vous partager l'imprime écran pour vous faire voir... bref donc je dessine avec un brush crayon de bois par exemple et à un moment je vais pour gommer et quand je reviens pour dessiner là le brush ne dessine plus du tout, impossible faut que je change de brush pr continuer ou si il me faut absolument celui là je suis obliger de fermer mon dessin et l'ouvrir de nouveau et là ça reprend... étrange n'est ce pas ? ^^ donc oui je vais aller raconter ce petit bug là aussi. En tt cas c'est super ce que vous faites pour Krita, ça serai juste un peu mieux si'il y avait plus de tutos en français, car j'en connais pas mal qui apprécierai mieux le logiciel avec des explications en français pour le coup.. J'avoue que je serai plus efficace pour l'utiliser et l’étudier dans ses fonctions et prouver à certains que ce logiciels à largement sa "place" sur le podium si je puis dire... enfin pour dire que se serai super cooolll !!! ^^ Merci et vous souhaite bon courage en ces temps de confinement.
