Painting studies

Combining faces at various view angles and a consistent light setup and different facial expression (all from imagination) is really difficult. I often struggle about the close-up panel on the comic, especially during dialog scene that require this consistency of characters and shaders/light. So, I keep training to try to get hopefully better at it one day. So far, still a frustration.

Book 4 print-proof prototypes

I'm super excited: I received print proof prototypes for Pepper&Carrot book 4. In English from DriveThrucomics and in French from Glénat, the two almost in sync. They both looks perfect! 😸 They'll be available at the same time next week, I'm working on the release.

Work in Progress screenshot (ep 37)

Work in progress comic page on future episode 37 (and the opening of season 5) of Pepper&Carrot. It looks like I'll have a lot of fire effect to paint to give life to this big phoenix. I can't wait to color it! But first, I have to complete all the drawings and do a quick shading pass on all of them. That is still a lot of work to do before coloring 😅

Miolek, adult size

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 4 comments
It's [Caturday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Caturday) (like on every caturday), but an opportunity to share a photo of 'Miolek', [a kitten I adopted back in 2020](https://www.davidrevoy.com/article798/miolek). He is my third cat, 18 months old, at full adult size and with his slightly damaged ear that gives him a 'cute bad boy' look. Very high-Energy and playful cat, he has a cult for any form of water: tap, shower, bath, garden hose and love to run under the rain. We even have a ritual to clean his paw with a towel when he come back home all muddy from outside. He also prefers to sleep on cold hard surface. My two other cats are really differents, do you know cats like that?

In Bloom

I wanted to paint saturated yellows after seeing my Forsythia tree blooming. I'm still studying other way to paint better values, light, edges and forms. Doing small improvements here and there to build more confidence. **Hi-resolution and source:** [here](https://www.peppercarrot.com/xx/viewer/artworks-src__2022-03-02_In-Bloom_by-David-Revoy.html)(1600px x 1600px; not a big one)

Amazing! Thank you for your many replies ( between 150 and 200 if I combine social medias?) I read them all. And it's really serious material for thoughts. I sent them all to the studio. TV Show questions

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 23 comments
If Pepper&Carrot was a TV Show, what optimal lenght for an episode? Target audience? Type of stories? 2D or 3D? I just had a meeting with a studio and we are curious to know your opinion. Thanks for the help 😻

The market

_Click the picture to enlarge to full resolution (5689x3200px), should be enough for a wallpaper :-)_ This illustration might become the first panel for my next episode. I took the time to explore and work on my "brushwork". I also had plenty of concept-art to do on this new location and for imagining clothes. It was difficult because I wanted to capture a specific mood and lighting I had in mind. I wanted a strong key light; but not falling into a chiaroscuro setup with too hard shadows, so I decided to fill the shadows with an over exagerated light bouncing (or radiosity/indirect-lighting). I also put a large cold top ambiant light (sky box?), more something seen in modern movie set and CG animation. I also got a lot of color variation from the top key light filtered by the big piece of drapery that shade the street. I could this way place saturated mandarin orange and lime green colors; and make more light bouncing. All in all, I put a lot of work into the light ...and I like this game! **Source/Krita file:** https://www.peppercarrot.com/fr/viewer/artworks-src__2022-02-21_The-market_by-David-Revoy.html But I'm not fully happy with the workflow I used for this piece; I could invest a little bit more time into the part where I started to block volumes in black and white, just after the thumbnails and before recoloring (I used mostly the 'Overlay' blending mode, btw). I probably could save half time if I planned the artwork a bit better. But that's the charm of also exploring. ## Video timelapse: - **Peertube:** https://peertube.touhoppai.moe/w/pzremzzBEGtLEQe6idt2CB - **Youtube:** https://youtu.be/HctINVnEMx0 Here is also an accelerated timelapse of the screen recording captures while making this digital painting illustration with the software Krita 5.0.2 on Kubuntu Linux. The video is 2min43 long but the original time was around 15h and it was painted on a Intuos 4 XL. Krita 5.0.2 (appimage) is incredibly reliable and stable here. A real pleasure to paint with it, make brushes and experiment. I started to test Krita 5 in September, and this version is "day and night" compare to all the previous version I beta-tested during episode 36 of Pepper&Carrot.

Speedpaintings Brushes, Tips and 4 Timelapses - Krita 5

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 11 comments
I share my 4 new brushes for speedpainting in Krita 5, and a new video! The video contains links, install, usage and 4 timelapses. ## Videos: - https://peertube.touhoppai.moe/w/1RAmDfbWxhrqVXtsuDo8st - https://youtu.be/6rRdAlOsdS4 ## Download and Install First, download the zip files. The brushes are designed for tablets with Tilt support. But if your device doesn't come with a Tilt support (or if you use a mouse) don't worry: I made a special version for you. - ⏩ Version for device with Tilt support: https://www.peppercarrot.com/extras/resources/2022-02-19_Flat_Brushes_Speedpainting.zip - ⏩ Version for device **without** Tilt support: https://www.peppercarrot.com/extras/resources/2022-02-19_Flat_Brushes_Speedpainting_NO-TILT.zip After the download, extract the Bundle file somewhere on your system. Open Krita, go to Settings, Manage Resource Libraries, and click the import button. Now locate your Bundle file on the disk, select it and press Open. A socket with the Bundle will appear at the end of your list. It has a frame around it, and that means the bundle is activated. Now you can go ahead, close this dialog, Create a new file, and then scroll your brush list and you'll find the four new brushes side by side. Now you are set to paint with them! ## Description and Usage **"Flat Paint Brush with variations"** might look a little weird on this pack, but this brushes is great for blocking big volumes at an early step of your piece. It creates quickly a rich texture with an interesting pattern constantly color shifting. It really helps to feed the canvas and suggest many details. [![](data/images/blog/2022/2022-02-20_f-_flat-paint-brush_with-variations.jpg)](data/images/blog/2022/2022-02-20_f-_flat-paint-brush_with-variations.jpg) **"Flat Paint Brush Creamy"** takes advantages of new development in Krita 5. You'll experience good ability to mix colors at low pressure while you'll keep a tool that also paint sharp accents at full pressure and can cut shapes with a strong edge. It's the main brush of the pack to sculpt the volumes and do modeling with that painterly feeling. [![](data/images/blog/2022/2022-02-20_f-_flat-paint-brush_creamy.jpg)](data/images/blog/2022/2022-02-20_f-_flat-paint-brush_creamy.jpg) The third brush, **"Flat Paint Brush Dry"**, is a presets that produce softer edges if I compare it to the two previous brushes. But this preset is also able to cover fully area when used with a lot of pressure on the stylus. It brings a good contrast of rendering with the two previous brushes and I use it to paint shape with soft edges like bushes, trees, or when I need to rub lightly an area to bring more color vibration to it. [![](data/images/blog/2022/2022-02-20_f-_flat-paint-brush_dry.jpg)](data/images/blog/2022/2022-02-20_f-_flat-paint-brush_dry.jpg) Finally, the last one **"Flat Small Brush for solid edge"** has everything in the title. it is a brush that cover the area with full opacity with a solid clean edge; but still preserves a little bit of expression and texture on the tail and the edges. It's perfect to draw details on the top, especially when they are made of single brush strokes. [![](data/images/blog/2022/2022-02-20_f-_flat-small-brush_for-solid-edges.jpg)](data/images/blog/2022/2022-02-20_f-_flat-small-brush_for-solid-edges.jpg) ## Timelapses I recorded four studies (see the last part of the video) , and with this accelerated movies, you'll see how I used the brushes along other brushes from my previous brush presets. The studies took me between thirty minutes to one hour for each, and I hope this timelapse will bring you inspiration and tips to dive into speedpainting. ## License **License of the video:** Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International **Licenses of the brushes:** In short: the brush are free, use them as you want (ok for everything, commercial, etc). Here is four studies I made recently to test new brushes and also to improve painting into a limited time. Time budget: 30 min (the blue mountain), 45 min (the city in canyon), 1h (the watermill house, the bridge). Book 4 is coming soon!

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 10 comments
One of the big item on my TODO list to start 2022 was to compile all recent episodes of Pepper&Carrot (from episode 30 to 36) into a book 4. It took me time; but I'm now near the end of this big task. If everything is ok with the proof, the book could be available next month, exactly in sync with the French release of book 4 by Glénat publishing.
