I just finished to paint a remake of the illustration "[flying around Komona](http://www.peppercarrot.com/en/article250/flying-around-komona-wallpaper "flying around Komona" )". This remake is optimized for vertical covers (print) and illustrate a scene of the episode 3 just after Pepper bought pumpkinstars at the market.

## About Hugin:
If you like drawing on large sheet of paper but decided you can't do it because you own only a small scanner, then this article about Hugin is for you.
What is [Hugin](http://hugin.sourceforge.net/ "Hugin" )? Hugin is a free/libre open-source software. With Hugin, you can assemble a mosaic of photographs into a complete immersive panorama, stitch any series of overlapping pictures and much more. I'm using Hugin since 2010. Hugin is a very technical tool with many options. The development team is doing big effort to simplify the process, and recent versions are really easier to use than the previous one, but still not really as intuitive as modern software: I still need my notes to get things done with it. But if you know your way and settings the tool is easy. Hugin can be really faster than doing the stitching manually and produce a perfect result. Convinced? Follow me.
**Install Hugin:**
On Ubuntu/Elementary/Linux Mint (Ctrl+C to copy line in your browser, Ctrl+Shift+V to paste on terminal. One line at a time).
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hugin/hugin-builds
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install hugin
On other Linux distro, Mac and Windows , check the [download page](http://hugin.sourceforge.net/download/ "download page" ) of the project.
## The process, step by step:
1\. Here the problem start: I like drawing on A3 sized paper (29,7x42 centimeter / 11.69x16.53 inches), it's double size than A4 and have more room for drawings details.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_01.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_01.jpg)
2\. But I don't have a A3 scanner at home : they are expensive and take a lot of room. I also have no idea where I could find a A3 scanner compatible with Linux. It's only problems, so I have to find a solution with my A4 scanner. A4 scanner are cheap and nowaday bundled with many printers 'all in one' devices. Here under my old Canon Pixma MP560 all-in-one printer scanner with a A3 sheet in the A4 scan top part. I'm scanning my big A3 artwork documents this way in two time, flipping the artwork upside down on the little scanner.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_02.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_02.jpg)
3\. I scan them with Xsane on Linux Mint 17.3. I like Xsane because if you remove all unecessary panels and keep only the main user interface, it can just scan and auto-save the picture in a target folder. This way, I get two PNG files in sRGB , A4 sized with 300ppi quality (selected in blue here).
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_03.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_03.jpg)
4\. Here is the two scanned documents. I often have white margin all around the artwork, I rarely draw on all the surface of the A3. Only a central part of it. This way I need only two scans to get the full artwork scanned with an overlapping area. It's important to have overlaps. Hugin will use the informations in the overlapping area to match the document together and stich them perfectly.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_04.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_04.jpg)
5\. Before feeding Hugin with our raw scans, we need to prepare them a bit. That's why I'm rotating the second scan at 180° thanks to the editing functions of the image viewer [Nomacs](http://nomacs.org/ "Nomacs" ).
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_05.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_05.jpg)
6\. The preparation is all about filenaming and alignement. The filenames must follow and images must have similar orientation. Hugin does a good job only if the images are ready this way.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_06.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_06.jpg)
7\. We can finally open Hugin. Maybe in your operating system's menu, there is multiple entries for Hugin. Select the one named "Hugin Panorama creator" in this case then press the 'Load images...' button.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_07.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_07.jpg)
8\. [1] Do a multiple selection to select your files ( holding Ctrl key ) then [2] press 'Open'.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_08.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_08.jpg)
9\. After the files are selected, you'll see this unfriendly dialog prompting you for a 'HFOV(v)' number [1]. Don't ask me what a 'HFOV(v) number' is, I have no idea. Just remember for this field to enter '10' degrees. This magic number come from [an outdated official tutorial](http://hugin.sourceforge.net/tutorials/scans/en.shtml "an outdated official tutorial" ). You'll be stuck at this dialog if you don't remember it. Too bad a simple 'scanner' preset don't exist here to make this step intuitive... When it's done, Then press [2] 'OK'.
**2021 edit:** Franz, in the comment section of this article, reports that '5' degrees is even more precise; and it makes sens after also reading the explanation of Zachary Vance, also in the comment section. Thank you both for the feedback!
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_09.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_09.jpg)
10\. Press the [1] 'Align' button, it should pop-up a console with computer output you don't need to read (it will auto-close itself anyway). Just check your picture properly aligned after that within the control screen [2].
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_10.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_10.jpg)
11\. The last step, is to [1] Press the 'Create Panorama...' button, [2] switch the format to PNG , [3] Select the only option available and [4] press OK.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_11.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_11.jpg)
12\. You'll be prompted for saving two files. Just keep the default name and press OK. Then another console will pop-up with computer output, just wait it to finish, it will close itself. You should have a new dialog on screen indicating 'Status Completed'.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_12.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_12.jpg)
13\. Check your files on your file explorer: your autostiched version should be done. You can then close all windows of Hugin and delete the two original half-scan and the \*.pto files created by Hugin.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_13.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_13.jpg)
14\. A last step is just a little rotation with the image viewer [Nomacs](http://nomacs.org/ "Nomacs" ) and saving.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_14.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_14.jpg)
15\. It's done : the two scanned parts of the picture were autostiched in a single picture thanks to Hugin. You can't notice the area where the two scanned were merged, even if you zoom on the paper texture itself. It's really perfect work.
[![](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_15.jpg)](data/images/blog/2016/02/2016-02-22_autostiching-scanned-a4-artworks-in-a3-with-hugin_15.jpg)

★ The [final colored artwork here](http://www.davidrevoy.com/article191/autumnus "final artwork here" ) (note: I removed the flute girl for artistic reasons.)
That's all for today and Hugin. If you practise, you can scan many large comic pages and stich them in no time with just clicking at the right button and fighting a bit with pop-ups and temporary files. I hope this tutorial will help you to draw on larger sheet of paper and take advantage of this great tool.
A big thanks to the Hugin developpers!

Appolinaria74 is talented cross-stich designer and developper. I'm really impressed with the likeness of her results, and her abilities to really port the spirit of the digital painting picture to the cross-stich technic. If you are a cross-stich practiser, or interrested in; she sells models and templates (link at the end) . I'm the proud owner of one of her cross-stitch from [this model](http://appolinaria74.gallery.ru/watch?a=bpZd-ksTN "this model" ), it's on my wall. Thank you Appolinaria for bringing Pepper&Carrot to the cross-stitch world and for your support!

[Xuan Minh Pham](https://twitter.com/pixelminh "Xuan Minh Pham" ), programer and pixel-artist joined by [Izioq](https://twitter.com/izioq "Izioq" ), a music composer just launched [a Kickstarter project](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1771562221/pepper-and-carrot-chaosah-balls-an-arcade-retro-ga "a Kickstarter project" ) to crowdfund 10 000€ for the production of a **proprietary** (but DRM free) retro arcade video game, announced for PC, Mac & Linux, named **Pepper&Carrot: Chaosah Balls**.
The game is a 2D Pang-like game with pixel-art graphism were you can play Pepper and other characters of Pepper&Carrot ( prototype screenrecorded in the video under). The project is totally approved on my side because it respect all the aspect of the [Creative Commons Attribution](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ "Creative Commons Attribution" ) license. A big thanks to them for consulting me before releasing the page and applying my advices and corrections. I'm not working on this production or earning money from it: it's an independent project. By backing this project you support Xuan Minh Pham and Izioq in their quest to make this cool 2D video game. I wish them good luck to crowdfund their project!

One of the maintenance task I had this week on my to-do: cleaning the 'artworks'.
The goal: to help the 'derivativion' effort, ease on my side the maintenance and centralise the sources.
Changes:
\- more element layered ( especially on the two 'cover' artworks).
\- integration in the sources page of Pepper&Carrot.
\- creation of an experimental renderfarm dedicated to the artworks.
Available:
\- hi-res ( full size, jpg 95% quality).
\- low-res (resized to fit inside a 1920x1920px, 92% quality).
\- sources (Krita *.kra files layered).
( Note: for *.zip it might take 24h for the server to store all the files. )

Dustin Cabeal is a writer and founder of [comicbastards.com](http://comicbastards.com/ "comicbastards.com" ). 'Comic Bastards’ goal is a simple one: to help comic book readers of all kinds discover the world of comics, but most important of all indie comics. It's a web portal with reviews, podcasts, press release about Comic and Manga.
I was happy to discover the review of Pepper&Carrot: all informations are accurate and I really liked the nice words about Pepper&Carrot ( and 5/5 [score](http://comicbastards.com/review-scoring/ "score" ), yay! ). Thank you!

Here is a video tutorial about the creation of brushes (stamps/stencils) in Krita. I often create brushes 'on the fly' when I have to paint something repetitive (small rocks, bubbles, leaves, herbs, etc... ). It's easy and quick to create this type of brushes with the right method. With this video, I hope I'll share this knowledge.
**[edit 2020]**
WARNING: Since 2016 (release of this video), Krita developers changed the dialog: the checkbox "[ ] Create mask from color" in the Stamp panel is now checked by default and you'll have to uncheck it manually to preserve the color of the stamp. My bad for telling in the video to keep all the default, I'll learn next time I do a video to explain the option in case they change.

On the last days, [I had to fight a lot](article547/attention-a-kickstarter-campaign-abuse-peppercarrot-s-license "I had to fight a lot" ) for the respect of the license of Pepper&Carrot (because of [a project on kickstarter](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1627457613/pepper-and-carrot-volume-2 "a project on kickstarter" )). Today the author of this project contacted me to announce he closed his page. Good! And now, what to do ?... I decided to spend the last 24h working on something creative, a new project, let change a bad experience into a positive one!

82 pages and all episodes published so far. This is to send **a big thank you** to all the Pepper&Carrot community.

**Update 2018:**
I had to edit a technical part of this article: what I wrote about the cost, the duration of the production and a ETA was just not informative and unrealistic. After investigating for month (then years) on this project about how to make it with FLOSS, the taxes, the shipping, etc... I discovered it was a time sink and was more complex than I thought on every levels. This article still displays the free ebook PDF: that was the real very constructive part of this post I wrote after a time of crisis.

I compose here a new blog-post **to give fresh news** one day after the post "[a Kickstarter campaign abuse Pepper&Carrot's license](article547/attention-a-kickstarter-campaign-abuse-peppercarrot-s-license "a Kickstarter campaign abuse Pepper&Carrot's license" )." about [this kickstarter project](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1627457613/pepper-and-carrot-volume-2 "this kickstarter project" ) .
First, I want **to thank you all** for the massive help, questions and reaction. I tried to reply to many questions. Thanks also for all the suggestion I received to fix the website and explain better the CC-By 4.0 license. Sure, there is still room to improve the communication about it and I fixed little mistake here and here and I'll continue to work on it for the future. But Let be honest : on dozen of projects totally respecting the CC-BY rules, this one wasn't respecting them on purpose. **It's not about the documentation**.
## Morning :
The author of kickstarter page contacted me this morning (via email) doing as if he never heard about the any issue or recommendation, with a strategy of victim. I replied him again the detail, the CC-By, etc... That's how the Kickstarter page **received a first pass of fix** toward a CC-By compliance this morning. There is still many room to improve and many shadows : here are my comments about it written on the top of the page in red frames ( click to enlarge ) :
[![](data/images/press/2016-01-19_screencapture-kickstarter-pepper-and-carrot-volume-2_net.tb.jpg)](data/images/press/2016-01-19_screencapture-kickstarter-pepper-and-carrot-volume-2_net.jpg)
This author caused me a lot of trouble, and always play between legal/illegal, always shading himself behind a 'We', behind fictive company. For those interested in more background, I recommend to read comments on the post of yesterday ( [Here](article547/attention-a-kickstarter-campaign-abuse-peppercarrot-s-license#c1453197240-1 "Here" ) about the story of the first kickstarter , [here](article547/attention-a-kickstarter-campaign-abuse-peppercarrot-s-license#c1453201126-1 "here" ) about the NinjaKnight comic donation via Patreon ).
## Early afternoon :
The [kickstarter page](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1627457613/pepper-and-carrot-volume-2 "kickstarter page" ) has been turned down by Kickstarter , screenshot under with my first reaction.
![](data/images/press/2016-01-19_screenshot_001_net.jpg)
I also received [an email](extras/forum/2016-01-19_email-discution-kickstarter.jpg "an email" ) from "Kickstarter Copyright" notifying me about the "hidden status" of the kickstarter page. **Thank you**.
I'm open to discutions with Kickstarter, providing documents, screenshots, email discutions if they need.
I'm 100% transparent and I write all I can publicly using my real name, hosting this project on my server and being 100% legal in my activity.
## Late afternoon :
The [kickstarter page](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1627457613/pepper-and-carrot-volume-2 "kickstarter page" ) is back. Same version that the one seen in the morning.
Hard to understand any logic behind it...
## Evening :
I received email from Kickstarter about the author claiming he did the necessary changes.
He did ( same change than in morning ) . **The page is almost fully compliant with CC-BY right now**, and he clearly write I do not endorse the project.
**I'm ok to not fight more with this final result.** Not ideal. Still many wrong things, many lies. "Not legit but legal".
I requested Kickstarter to send a message to all his backer. They need to see the page updated with newer information, because they bought a lie.
On my side , show must go on! **Let focus now on future episode 14 **; and plan a real printing project for summer!
## Moving forward: a future printed version
I'm right now discussing with the Krita Foundation for an official ( one I endorse, with review on quality ) printed version in english with **all benefit** going to only free and open sources software I'm using ( GNU/Linux, Krita, Gmic, Inkscape... smaller projects too, as percent ). It will take time to setup and it will be scheduled for summer 2016. Thanks for your patience.

Update on 19 January, 23:21 , French time : The author of the kickstarter page is editing and fixing the page to be compliant with CC-BY 4.0 international. Thanks for not reporting the page anymore. [more updates on day 2 post](http://peppercarrot.com/en/article348/day-2-kickstarter-campaign-news "more updates on day 2 post" ) ]
Hi,
**I do not endorse and I'm not involved** as an author in the running Kickstarter campaign "[Pepper and Carrot Volume 2](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1627457613/pepper-and-carrot-volume-2 "Pepper and Carrot Volume 2" )" created by Sir Ricky McGentleman (even if the page can make you believe I'm part of it).
The money invested on it benefit to Sir Ricky McGentleman, not me. I'm not against the commercial usage in this project, I'm against the non-respect of the license : (in short, endorsement of original creator, no indication when changes are made, missing attributions for translators, wrong link to the license). I requested Kickstarter **to take down the page **for this reasons.
\- **Violations details:** [noted on a screenshot here](data/images/press/2016-01-18_screencapture-kickstarter-pepper-and-carrot-volume-2_commented_net.jpg "violation details here" )
\- **License of Pepper&Carrot:** [Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Internationnal](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" )
**Kickstater doesn't reply **my report and the creator of the page ignores my recommendations.
I feel abused... It affect my productivity and inspiration.
Can you help me by sharing, reporting the page and make noise?...
Thank you,
\- David Revoy
