September in a nutshell

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 1 comment
I'm taking a little break during the production of the future episode 19 to inform you about many news around Pepper&Carrot. In fact, the project grow, grow, GROW! :-) Here is the highlight of this September 2016: ## The French buzz Early September, the published version of [Pepper&Carrot by Glénat](article578/derivation-publishing-by-glenat "Pepper&Carrot by Glénat" ) was released in French libraries and e-shop. This event made a buzz in France. Comic-press and many blogs on the french Internet wrote tons of content about it in a hot debate. In a nutshell, one side was welcoming something new (the printing of a free/libre comic) while the other side was angry about it. Long story short: I -for sure- spent too much energy and time into this but I felt no other choices. For an overview of this buzz with all links and references I advice [this article](http://www.phylacterium.fr/?p=2672 "this article" ) (in french) by the librarian curator MrPetch on his blog who tried to be "objective as possible". An auto-translated English version can be generated [here](https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.phylacterium.fr%2F%3Fp%3D2672&edit-text=&act=url "here" ). Many thanks to all the one who gave me help and support in this adventure! ![](data/images/news/2016-09-27-news/2016-09-27_news_01_library.jpg) _Photo of Pepper&Carrot french comic in a comicshop in Montrouge (south of Paris) [by @littlejo83](https://twitter.com/littlejo83/status/775380948594593792 "by @littlejo83" ) _ ## Future episode 19: opening the creative process A lot of work has been done on the next Pepper&Carrot episode 19 to open more a part of the core creative process. A success! I received rich propositions to fix the story, better dialogs and punctuations by a little group of trusted contributors on our [IRC channel](http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=%23pepper%26carrot "IRC channel" ). Right now the episode is in "_string freeze_" for the speechbubbles so the translator-team will be able to start working on the git repository very soon. About the artwork, I'm inking right now page 4. I'll release the episode when it will be ready, estimated around mid October. ![](data/images/news/2016-09-27-news/2016-09-27_news_02_ep19.jpg) _screenshot of episode 19 during the inking of the first panel (work-in-progress)_ ## The open-movie Pepper&Carrot is funded ! Nikolai Mamashev finished with success [his Indiegogo campaign](https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pepper-and-carrot-motion-comic#/ "his Indigogo campaign" ) for his 'Motion Comic' project. His goal? To transform the episode 6 "The Potion Contest" into an animated 'motion comic'! A **big congratulation** to him and to all the supporter of the project for funding his derivative and creative project. At the moment, you can follow the update of his project in the '[update page](https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pepper-and-carrot-motion-comic#/updates "update page" )' of his Indiegogo page, but I also saw update falling on the [Morevna blog](https://morevnaproject.org/blog/ "Morevna blog" ). [youtube]C5ivMC4e6Oo[/youtube] _a video sample made by Nikolai to promote the campaign_ ## The super translator of the month In September I received many translations by Thomas Nordstrøm to translate all the episodes in Norsk, the Norwegian language. Translating all Pepper&Carrot was probably easy two years ago when the number of episode was easy to count on the fingers of a single hand, but nowaday, with more than 100 pages of comic plus the full website, it's a big big work. And Thomas managed everything between the 3 September and today, the 28! His secret? A 6 year old daughter eagerly waiting for new episodes translated :-) A big big thanks Thomas for all his contribution! ![](data/images/news/2016-09-27-news/2016-09-27_news_03_norsk.jpg) _A sample of the [episode 13](no/article338/episode-13-the-pyjama-party "episode 13" ), in Norsk._ ## 10000 daily visitors I do not use a script or a code to track visitors (no Google Analytic on peppercarrot.com) but I like to check the graph proposed by the built-in tool coming with my hosting offer at OVH. It's good enough to get a general idea of the traffic. In September, the audience crossed the 10K visitor per days, and during the french debate, I had spike at 100K ! The audience of Pepper&Carrot for sure is growing a lot. ![](data/images/news/2016-09-27-news/2016-09-27_news_04_urchin.jpg) _peppercarrot.com graph of daily unique visitors in end September_ ## A new era of communication Do you want to chat with us? I mean, with other Pepper&Carrot translators, contributors or fan? We have now many more option! Our main channel, [the IRC channel #pepper&carrot on Freenode](http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=%23pepper%26carrot "the IRC channel #pepper&carrot on Freenode" ) exist since years now, but recently it received many improvements. Thanks to the work of Valvin, our IRC channel now is in sync with another channel: he made a bridge to the Framateam channel "[Komona](https://framateam.org/peppercarrot/channels/irc "Komona" )". The new features are the possibility to log and read discussion later, the possibility to install and read the channel on a smartphone (Framateam use [Mattermost](https://www.mattermost.org/ "Mattermost" )) and the channel display videos, avatars and pictures. Another contributor, Gleki also added during summer a bridge to Telegram; so, if you like this client, know you can find a [Pepper&Carrot channel on Telegram](https://telegram.me/joinchat/BLVsYz_DIz-S-TJZB9XW7A "Pepper&Carrot channel on Telegram" ) that also sync with the IRC main channel. Also, for french a special channel "[Pepper's House](https://framateam.org/peppercarrot/channels/town-square "Pepper's House" )" was also added by Valvin. That's all for this month :-)

The derivative Pepper&Carrot Motion Comic project by Nikolai Mamashev

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 14 comments
[Nikolai Mamashev](https://plus.google.com/108139727676123285572 "Nikolai Mamashev" ) is running an [Indiegogo campaign](https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pepper-and-carrot-motion-comic#/ "Indigogo campaign" ). His goal? to find 4000$ to get producion time to transform the [episode 6](article471/episode-6-the-potion-contest "episode 6" ) of Pepper&Carrot , 'The potion contest' into an animated video, a motion comic! First, a little disclaimer: I'm not participating in this project (exept obviously for this blog post) and I'll not benefit from the money of this indiegogo campaign: It's all for Nikolai's production and I'm totally fine with it. I love his project, and let me tell you why, as the author of Pepper&Carrot, I think his project needs to be funded: ## Respect of the art style Nikolai Mamashev is a known artist in the world of free/libre software, you probably met him already around the [Morevna project](https://morevnaproject.org/category/artists/nikolai-mamashev/ "Morevna project" ) or in a [previous contribution](article545/animation-project-by-nikolai-mamashev "previous contribution" ) to Pepper&Carrot. Nikolai is a skilled professional artist with a unique style but for this project, I'm honored he decided **to give life to my own art style** and put his own art style into background. That's an ultimate fan-art piece and I'm blushing only at thinking about this present. His method: cuting all the artwork from the source and redrawing the missing frames, animating, deforming the original artwork. An enormous amount of work done with Krita, MyPaint, Inkscape and Blender. Here are gif animations you can find on Nikolai Indiegogo campaign: ![](data/images/derivations/2016-09-01_motion-comic-project-indigogo_by-nikola/2016-09-01_motion-comic-project-indigogo_by-Nikolai-Mamashev_demo2.gif) _bones, wind, complex cut. Impressive! And this shot is a simple one of the comic..._ ![](data/images/derivations/2016-09-01_motion-comic-project-indigogo_by-nikola/2016-09-01_motion-comic-project-indigogo_by-Nikolai-Mamashev_demo3.gif) _blender video sequence editor, with effect, audio, transitions_ ![](data/images/derivations/2016-09-01_motion-comic-project-indigogo_by-nikola/2016-09-01_motion-comic-project-indigogo_by-Nikolai-Mamashev_demo1.gif) _Krita transform tool in action, checking if every part of the artwork are ready_ ## Amazing production price offer Nikolai ask 4000$ to the community to produce this short. **4000$ for more than 40 shots. Do the math**, with audio, sources, and free CC-BY-SA license, it's a very good deal (almost insane) for this type of production. We will never see a good offer around like this twice, be sure about it. Here is an overview of the [episode 6](article471/episode-6-the-potion-contest "episode 6" ) : Shichimi! Coriander! Saffron! actions a lot of magic effect! ... and monster! Well, I'm exited to have a motion-comic animated version about it. ![](data/images/derivations/2016-09-01_motion-comic-project-indigogo_by-nikola/2016-09-01_motion-comic-project-indigogo_by-nikolai-mamashev_storyboard.jpg) ## High quality sample Nikolai also provides two finished quality shot as a sample to promote the campaign, watch it, it's short but magical to see Pepper taking life. Two shots gives around 20sec of video. With the 40 shots of episode 6, I'm pretty sure the final will be an animation between 3 or 4 minutes! [youtube]C5ivMC4e6Oo[/youtube] ## License To finish, Nikolai propose all the sources files, and his work as CC-BY-SA. An open-license! So, more free culture around, and yes, I'll be able to reuse sample of his work for, exemple, a Pepper&Carrot trailer or when I'll need to pitch the project in a video. **So ready to fund an awesome project? Thank you if you can help Nikolai!** **** **We need noise about it :-)** A comment? Something you would prefer and stops you? Encouragement? Leave a message on the comment bellow, and I'm sure Nikolai will be around to interact with you.

Krita Appimage for cats

[info] **Translation available:** [ \- Japanese](http://sp-cute.hatenablog.com/entry/2017/01/27/221358 "Japanese" ), by Guruguru.[/info] Hey Krita users of GNU/Linux operating systems! Tired to upgrade or jump distro only to use a newer version? Tired to hunt for a maintained repository? Tired to [build from source](article193/guide-building-krita-on-linux-for-cats "build from source" ) only for using Krita? Ladies and gent, get introduced to... _(♫ ♩ roll drum ♫ ♩)_... the Krita Appimage! ## Get Krita appimage ![](data/images/blog/2016/08/appimage-for-cat_frame1_by-david-revoy.jpg) [Appimages](http://appimage.org/ "Appimages" ) is a technology designed for GNU/Linux. An Appimage is an application that can run anywhere, without requiring complex dependencies and run as the developers designed them: you get the right libraries bundled and everything inside for the best user experience. You can download Appimage of Krita on [krita.org](https://krita.org "krita.org" ). Stable versions are under the 'Download' category, unstable development version (for testing) can be found on the blog (scroll down the front page). You can save your Appimages files **where you want** on your disk. They are single 'big' files. _ (eg. I save mine on /home/deevad/Sources/ and each Appimages of Krita take less than 80MB )_ ## Security ![](data/images/blog/2016/08/appimage-for-cat_frame2_by-david-revoy.jpg) Are you sure this file is trusted and come from the developers of Krita on [krita.org](https://krita.org "krita.org" )? Fine! Security is **your responsibility**: a file downloaded on Internet can't run like that on **your computer** without your approval and that's good. How to communicate to the computer you approve this file? We just need to change the Appimage file to the **execute mode**. For this, two way: 1\. right click on the file, and in 'permission' tab add permission to 'execute'. 2\. ... or with a terminal, 'chmod +x' the file: chmod +x krita-3.0.1-Alpha-4c91a18-x86_64.appimage ## Time to run ![](data/images/blog/2016/08/appimage-for-cat_frame3_by-david-revoy.jpg) That's all! Double-click on the file, and you run this version of Krita. **Easy!** You like this version? Wants to use it daily? If your desktop environment and file manager is not too primitive, I'm sure you'll find feature how to add a shortcut to it to your main menu and set the Krita 'kra' files to 'Open With' with this Appimage. (eg. On XCFCE menu or on Cinnamon menu, a right click, Edit application... For the kra , a right click 'Open With' then select the application path, set it by default or in your list.) ## Last features, best stability ![](data/images/blog/2016/08/appimage-for-cat_frame4_by-david-revoy.jpg) \- Do you want a stable version for production? No problem! \- Do you want to play with the last 'alpha' feature to discuss? No problem! You can collect as many Appimage of Krita side by side as you want and keep your favorite version away from an unwanted update or a regression due to a change in a library. You want to jump to another GNU/Linux distro? Backup your Appimages; they will behave the same on your future system! **And you? Do you love Appimage? I do! ** ![](data/images/blog/2016/08/appimage-for-cat_frame0_by-david-revoy.jpg) Illustration: [Krita sources all layered here](http://www.peppercarrot.com/en/static6/sources&page=other "Krita sources here" ) (note: re-usage of Kiki the cyber squirel mascot of Krita, cc-by [Tyson Tan](http://tysontan.deviantart.com/gallery/ "Tysan Tan" ) ).

A lot of them gives between 1$, 3$ to 5$ per webcomic published (I publish maximum one episode every 2 monthes, something between eight or six episodes per years). Between episodes I often jump into the creation of free bonus for the community. It can be a Youtube tutorials, articles, brushkit, making-of, etc... My patron encourage me to publish the result online for everyone, because we don't like the concept of paywall (subscription with payment to get access to a content). For sure, selling this as a DvD or using gumroad or another way to make you pay with a trailer and more could have been a lot more efficient to receive money. But that's not my philosophy. So, if you consider my system more fair, encourage it! [Become my patron today on Patreon](https://www.patreon.com/davidrevoy "Become my patron today on Patreon" ). All money received will be carefully invested to grow my art and my involvement into the production of more free content and bonus. Note: Full license info and details at the end of the video

Pepper&Carrot derivation: first book printed by Glénat

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 39 comments
_Cover of Pepper&Carrot: © Glénat, reusing my CC-By artwork here_ A lot of you noticed the Glénat logo at the end of the last episode and I received many comments about it. So as promised, here is more information: ## Glénat ? Who ? Glénat is a **leader publishing company for comic album and manga**. They Publish mainly in French for the French market but also for Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands. They started publishing comics since the 80's and count nowadays more than 100 employees, thousands of famous authors an enormous catalog of translated US-Comics and Mangas. As a young kid, Glénat was the publisher of all my mangas. ![](data/images/derivations/2016-07_glenat/2016-07-06_glenat-article_book-at-home.jpg) _Guess what Pepper&Carrot has now in common with this books from my bookshelf? :-)(I know, nothing else than a logo, but let me dream, ok?)_ ## A printed comic book ? Nicolas Forsans, project manager at Glénat, met the Pepper&Carrot website 8 month ago. He was seduced with the concept and decided to build an internal dossier about it. After months of work, meeting and review, Glénat decided to add Pepper&Carrot to their official catalog to print and distribute the comic in France. It will happen on **start September 2016**, a classic date for release of books here in France, syncing with the end of holidays. This first book will propose episode 1 to [episode 11](article501/the-witches-of-chaosah "episode 11" ). Glénat invested for **a large release**: 10 000 books printed, 80 pages, 215 x 293 mm (8.2x11.4 inch) hardcover with high quality paper for the **mini public price** of 9.99€. (usual price here for this type of book is around 14,50€ and more) ![](data/images/derivations/2016-07_glenat/2016-06-07_glenat-article_webpage.jpg) More information directly on Glénat's website: [http://www.glenatbd.com/bd/pepper-et-carrot-tome-1-9782344017258.htm](http://www.glenatbd.com/bd/pepper-et-carrot-tome-1-9782344017258.htm "http://www.glenatbd.com/bd/pepper-et-carrot-tome-1-9782344017258.htm" ) ## Where does the money go ? Let's be clear: **I'm not earning any money on the sales** of the Glénat comic book. My main source of income is still the patronage of the audience [via Patreon](https://www.patreon.com/davidrevoy "via Patreon" ) _(plus a bit of Paypal and Tipeee)_. The low-cost and highly competitive price of the final book happens because of the removal of the usual part going to the author(s) and other smaller investment to prepay the production of all the pages. But! Last month, **Glénat joined the patronage** of Pepper&Carrot via Patreon as a 'Company' sponsor. That's why you can see the logo at the end of [my last webcomic](article577/episode-17-a-fresh-start "my last webcomic" ) ( the logo on the credit is a reward I offer to the companies sponsoring Pepper&Carrot episode). They are free to leave this sponsoring at any moment: our only contract is the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. ## License: who owns Pepper&Carrot now ? **Nothing changed**: Pepper&Carrot is still open, free, for everyone of us under the [Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license" ) (If you know CC licenses, you know I cannot revoke it). Glénat are used to work with their own contract since decades and the legal department had to adapt their structure to work with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. We ended by just adding a single page to the CC-By : a minimal set of paragraph just to ensure I'm the author and certify to publish the comic under the CC-By and Glénat to respect the rules of it. So, no additional special rules exists between Pepper&Carrot and Glénat : they **use the same rules as any other** derivatives projects and there is no exception about it. This was a great test to see how the CC-By was complex enough to fit the legal needs of a large industrial and commercial department. A success! ## Using CC-By into a proprietary result The strategy of Glénat was to produce a heavy graphic layer on the top of [the CC-By artworks](https://www.peppercarrot.com/static6/sources&page=artworks "the CC-By artworks" ) (new title art, new font, stylized desktop publishing). This way Glénat produce a derivative work with the source of Pepper&Carrot and so they can use it as a proprietary work. This is **allowed as long as the authors and contributors are credited correctly** by the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 international license. You can imagine that in this context a special effort was involved to add proper attribution everywhere inside the book and I was involved into reviewing the correct attributions. No one was forgot! They also went a step further adding a special page to thanks all the patrons from episode 1 to episode 11. This practice will help them **to protect a specific Glénat 'visual identity'** against potential competitor publishers, the low cost too. Other publishers or companies can still publish Pepper&Carrot, but they'll have to do their own cover desktop publishing by reusing the [source artwork](https://www.peppercarrot.com/0_sources/0ther/artworks/hi-res/2016-02-24_vertical-cover_remake_by-David-Revoy.jpg "source artwork" ) and not by duplicating the cover made by Glénat. ## Will Glénat contribute back ? Yes, Glénat will add value to the project on two aspect: First, Glénat paid a corrector for ironing the French version text and speech-bubbles and they will release the correction under CC-By license. This way, the community will be **allowed to merge back the 'fr' corrections** in the Git source code repositories. This publishing will also add another great value to the project: Glénat has **a powerful force of distribution, marketing** and a complex network with the comic press. It will bring more eyes on Pepper&Carrot for sure. I already received invitation to do autograph in bookstores. All Pepper&Carrot community projects will benefit of this boost of notoriety. ## Workflow: FLOSS to Adobe Nicolas Barberon, the dedicated in-house graphist at Glénat for working on the Pepper&Carrot project, made all the desktop Publishing on a Mac with the Adobe tools. He had to adapt his workflow to work with the Pepper&Carrot sources; Krita files, Inkscape SVGs and hi-quality Jpeg. Something unusual, without any classic Photoshop PSD 'industry-standards' files. I probably could produce PSDs and bend myself to use their standards, but I decided **my standards were more fair and legit** than the Adobe ones. At the end and with a little effort, everything worked. ![](data/images/derivations/2016-07_glenat/2016-07-06_glenat-article_reviewing-cromalins.jpg) _Glénat sent me prepress proofing to review the color quality... Twice._ I appreciated Glénat asked my feedback at many steps during the process and took it into account. For example, I could review the quality of [prepress proofing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prepress_proofing "prepress proofing" ) , enhance the cover artworks, giving opinion about colors and fonts used... I rejected the first set of 'proofing' because of ink and paper. They sent me another proposal, a lot better : the one (on photo) that will be used in final product now. Colors are how I designed them, and this is a good proof **my color setup under Linux with Krita and ArgyllCMS is accurate**. ## Conclusion? a first step to change the comic book industry! Ok, ok, it's only happening in France and not world wide... I know :) But I hope this first step is the right step. My alternative way to handle Free/Libre license for comics produces effects, and I keep in mind all of this couldn't happen without the support of the audience. They litteraly fuel Pepper&Carrot and this type of new experience happens only thanks to their support! I hope the model can be extended and will shake other publishers around the world and more; other artists. I persist to think artists can change the 'industry standards' by adopting new behavior at their own level, at the root of production, and **not wait something more fair coming from the top** of the pyramid. It's our responsibility to choose the tools we likes, the standards we trust and the rules we want. **So, who's next now? Marvel? DC? Disney? Shueisha?...** _( ok ok, let me dream ! :-p )_

Live streaming on Twitch: collaborative design of the Phanda

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 9 comments
Hey, I'm updating this blog-post few hours after the [live-streaming](https://www.twitch.tv/artwithkrita/v/71118060 "live-streaming" ) ended: thank you so much for watching the live video and for your advice, comments in the chat-room. You were **more than 200** to watch it! **You missed it?** The video expired on Twitch after 14 days; but it was also archived on Youtube [here](https://youtu.be/eb6zOCltr1o "here" ) ; unfortunately this archive doesn't show the interaction of the chat, so I'm often speaking alone on this video. **Here is what happened on it:** I had a time budget of 2h. So I decided to propose a creature design. I started by asking in the chat-room for ideas of combination of animals for a design in the next episode of Pepper&Carrot: because I need an agressive creature in future episode 17. The audience came up with really original ideas: (A) a Ferret+Python , (B) a Badger+Spider, (C) Bear+Mantis, (D) an Elephant+Panda+Pufferfish. I took the first 40min with a bit of presentation plus a little time on developing quickly this ideas. At the end: the concept (D) won the votes, but with a bit of (B) and (C). So I added a tail of badger, and the fur of the bear to the Elephant+Panda+Pufferfish. ![](data/images/blog/2016/06/2016-06-08_concept-art_e17_phanda_livestreaming_sketches-by-david-revoy.jpg) After this step, I started to render the sketch, with a low time budget of 1h20. I made a minimal drawing pass with a pencil preset to solidify my volumes on the top of the sketch, then I started to paint the concept. Before the color, we decided to go with [Red Panda](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_panda "Red Panda" ) colors. I tried to follow all the advices on the chat-room, but it was too fast to read them all. ( sorry Sixpairsoffeet ! I saw your questions and suggestions only at the end of the stream, same for many other). After the end of the streaming, I took time to read all the comments in the chat-room and so I could fix all the little issues: I removed the Dune-worm-trunk to something a bit less weird, I added more spikes, I added teeth, added stripes on the trunk, shading on the horn and little bones on the floor. And... here is the 'Phanda' ! ![](data/images/blog/2016/06/2016-06-08_concept-art_e17_phanda_livestreaming_by-david-revoy.jpg) _source file and hi-res on [peppercarrot.com'sources/misc'](http://www.peppercarrot.com/en/static6/sources&page=other "peppercarrot.com 'sources/misc'" ) category_ Thanks again for watching it!
